Scenic Drive Strawberries
map reference 12

In 1969, an adventure began for Michael Hayes in
Tocumwal with a few strawberry plants. Little did he
realise that this would become his forte.
In 1982, Michael purchased a bare piece of land on
Torgannah Road, Koonoomoo, this land is part of the fertile river flats along the Murray River. After many tiring hours, he obtained his goal and planted his first crop of strawberries.

Nestled amongst a magnificent environment comprisingof river red gums with citrus orchards to the east, this micro climate provides the ideal growing conditions as well as adjoining a permanent water source, that being the Torgannah Lagoon which is fed from the mightyMurray River.

With the need for diversification Michael decided to
embark on a range of jams and condiments. Wine making was one avenue that tickled his fancy and something that has become his niche. Fruit wines and liqueurs have now become his trademark. After spending countless hours and batches of wine in vats, he has now mastered his own recipes. He has also managed to make a range of other fruit wines and liqueurs of which all the fruit is grown on his adored property.

The Hayes family has now embarked on their tourismventure conveniently named The Big Strawberry. With the range of jams and condiments complete, the wine making has taken on a much bigger role with the aid of some professional tutoring from a distinguished “winemaker”, they have now released “Strawberry Crème” and “Strawberry Liqueur” to their diverse range
of fruit wines and liqueurs.
